Step 2. About the Internet

Web pages

Computers connected to the Internet can send and receive all sorts of information like emails, pictures, and, most commonly, web pages. The connections among all these computers allowed you to find this very file that you are reading. Your computer talked to the SmartGirl computer and asked for a file called internet2.html.* The SmartGirl computer gave your computer that file and you're now viewing it on the screen in front of you.

This page is very colorful; it has both text and pictures. So would it surprise you to learn that the file that your computer received from the SmartGirl computer is just a bunch of text? We can look at that text now if you'd like. At the top of this window, look under the View menu and find the Source or Page Source option. Click on it. It should open another window with a bunch of crazy text in it. This is called the source file, in which you can see the exact same text that the computer sees.

*FYI: You can figure out the name of the file you're looking at by checking the address (which usually starts with "http://") in the box at the top of this window.
