Lilia, by SmartGirl Author Erin

Ellie, Alice, and Molly, Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron all stood and watched in terror. “Isn’t there anything we can do?!” the girls screamed. “There is one thing, but it’s kind of extreme,” Cardreg replied, yelling against the noise from Earth. “Well?” they asked. “Like I said before, we can’t go across the border… but you can,” he said. “But I thought we could only enter and exit during the Annual Rain,” said Ellie. “There is an exception. If we can get Gaze to accept it, you can cross. But you can’t come back… ever,” said Cardreg, barely audible over the wind and Grogians. So many emotions were whirling inside of the three girls’ heads right then. They had grown so close to Lilia and everyone in it. But just when they would start to get attached to it, they would miss their old lives and families. There was something about Lilia that they loved, but there were so many people in their world that they loved, too. They couldn’t abandon everything they had ever known. “Well, I guess we better get to praying,” Molly said. Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron bowed down to the ground. The girls had no idea what they were supposed to do, so they just watched silently. Suddenly, Lilia began to shake. He trees, the ground, the water; even the sky was shaking. What happened next was hard to believe. They looked up to the sky waiting for a sign from Gaze. Then… the sky split. As if someone had just carved it with a knife, it split, and everything went dark. But a new light was shining through the crack, and a Holfman was lowering to the ground. “Queens of Lilia and Sons of Earth, I am Maya. I was the ruler of Lilia and I have received your request,” Maya spoke. Carsol, Cardreg, Zafron, Ellie, Molly, and Alice all stood in wonder and awe. The Lilians had all gathered to watch their great leader of the sky speak to them. “You Queens have showed great talent and power in your reign. If you wish to leave Lilia and defend Earth, you may, but…” she paused. “But what?” the girls asked. “You must take the Sons of Earth with you. Earth needs them and Earth needs you,” Maya responded. By now, the other Lilians had figured out that the boys were from Earth and they were whispering and mumbling to each other. “We will go,” the six said. Maya spread her paws over the Queens and Sons and bowed her head. “My companions of Gaze,” she paused again, looking at the Lilians that were surrounding here, “and of Lilia, I ask that you accept our plea to allow these brave warriors to cross; to defend their land as we have defended ours for so many generations.” Lilia began to shake again. The sky was closing back up. “You may now pass, but I shall return to Gaze to see that you do,” Maya said. She started back up toward the closing sky. The sunlight began to return to Lilia and the light from the cracked sky receded. Suddenly the sky stopped, only partially closed. Maya whipped around to face the Lilians. “What is going on?” she yelled angrily. “A war…” said a dark voice. It sent chills through the girls and the triplets. “I recognize his voice,” Molly said. “Felix,” whispered Ellie. “… and it is a war that you will surely lose! Earth is being torn apart by its very seams, and you can never stop me!” he laughed. Ellie glared at Felix, trying to gain control of his mind. He glared back, and Ellie developed a blank stare, collapsing to the ground. “Ellie!” Carsol cried, and he ran to her side. She sat up and shook her head. “I can’t use my powers on him,” she said, confused. “None of you can, individually… but maybe together you can,” Cardreg said.

The Lilians seemed to be getting bored with all the meetings they'd been having lately. Ukah, a Holfman about the same age as the triplets, stood up on the table. "You know," he said, "I'm beginning to think that there's nothing wrong at all--that it's all just those humans trying to cause trouble!" Ellie stepped over to where he was standing. She looked him in the eye. "Really?" she asked sarcastically. Suddenly Ukah's eyes turned completely white, his pupils disappearing. "What's happening?" Ellie asked, scared. Ukah's figure spoke the same words. The other two girls and the three guys ran over to her. Ellie shook her head and Ukah's pupils reappeared as he collapsed on the ground. "It's the Magic of Gaze," Vincent said. "Everyone in Lilia develops a special power, and it appears that yours is the ability to control anything with your mind."
Molly and Alice looked angry. "What about us?" they asked, crossing their arms. Cardreg lashed out at Molly. She quickly became... not invisible, but transparent, allowing Cardreg's arm to glide through her. "Found mine!" Molly said, smiling. Alice looked even more annoyed.
Ellie sniffed. "Does anyone smell..." she sniffed again, "smoke?" she asked. Alice looked down at her feet. The floor had turned black and sparks started shooting out from her feet.
"Alice, chill!" Zafron said, using his power to control water to extinguish the flames.
"OK, well that's interesting," Alice said.
"Lilians!" Guardia said, "Please focus on the..." Guardia's eyes turned white. "I'm going to shut up now," she finished. Vincent looked at Ellie. Ellie was staring hard at Guardia.
"Ellie!" admonished Vincent. Ellie jumped and released her focus from Guardia.
"You cannot abuse these powers!" Guardia exclaimed. Ellie hung her head.
"Sorry," she muttered.
The meeting went fairly quickly. Vincent assigned more patrols and told the three girls and three boys to check the border of Grog and the border of Earth. They set out to the Earth border first. "So if the border is right around there, why can't we just walk through it? asked Molly.
"Because," Cardreg explained, "Earth's atmosphere is different than Lilia's and Grog's. We wouldn't survive." They stopped in their tracks. The Earth border was right in front of them, but something was terribly wrong. There were objects flying back and forth on the other side, and trees were being uprooted. Alice saw her parents trying to walk in the street.
"Mom! Dad!" she cried.
"They can't hear you. You never existed!" Zafron yelled over the roaring wind.
"What's going on?!" Ellie and Molly screamed together.
"Something is messing up the natural balance," Carsol said. A gray shape moved in front of the border. Then another. Then dozens were walking up and down the street, terrorizing animals and the people, too.
"Grog Grog invaded Earth!" they all cried!

When the girls turned, they couldn't believe their eyes. Their attacker was... a human! He fired a shot at Alice, but she dove to the ground and he missed. They could tell he was armed with a gun, knife, and bow and arrows. The man pulled out his knife and ran toward them. Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron leaped from behind the girls and kicked down the man's arm. "Who are you?" demanded Cardreg, "and how did you get in here?!" "My name is Ronald. And yours is Dead!" he snickered, throwing his knife at Carsol's chest. Ellie jumped, grabbing the knife in the air and hurling it back at Ronald. The knife grazed his arm, causing him to clutch it and wipe the blood away. He pursed his lips and yelled. Ronald pulled his gun back out and began randomly firing. The six ran at him and attacked. Just as they reached him, he shot his gun again. The bullet flew past Molly's head and broke the chain on the gate. The bridge flew down, revealing the Army of Lilia, with Vincent leading the way. He raised his large paw and bellowed, "Army of Lilia, ATTACK!" The soldiers rushed forward and seized Ronald, but not without losing two Holfmans. Hayshire pulled out his sword and killed Ronald with a swift stab to the chest. Ronald muttered, "R - O - G - G..." and fell dead. The soldiers stayed behind to pick up the dead Holfmans while the three girls and three boys headed to their rooms in the castle, exhausted and understandably shocked. In the morning, Guardia and Vincent called another meeting. Everyone was sore from the battle and silent at the meeting. "Thank you, People of Lilia, for attending this meeting. I want to thank our Queens and their--I suppose you could say... 'Kings'--for helping us defeat the killer. He has been executed. We are now trying to figure out how he got in to Lilia," he said. Guardia spoke next. "We have identified the five Holfmans that were killed yesterday as Nanu, Fale, Ciate, Adat, and Jeckle. This has been an unfortunate loss, but a great victory. These five served Lilia well and have earned a special place in Gaze. They will not be forgotten!" A few sniffles were heard around the table. "What we have to worry about are Ronald's last letters, Alice," said Vincent. Alice stood. "Ronald obviously entered Lilia during the Annual Rain. Do you recognize him from your neighborhood?" Vincent asked. Alice thought hard. "Actually, I do!" she exclaimed, wide-eyed. "He came and cut the grass around some of my neighbors' houses," she explained. "He must have followed you in," said Guardia. "Great," said Molly. "So it's our fault!" "How can it be our fault? We didn't even mean to find Lilia!" argued Ellie. The three broke out in argument. "Enough!" shouted Vincent. The girls quieted down. "Just think about the letters. Everyone is dismissed," he said. The trio of girls and the trio of boys walked outside. The girls followed the guys around to the moat surrounding the castle.
"What did we come back here for?" asked Ellie. "It's time to clean the gate and feed the moat creatures," Carsol explained. The girls eyed each other with questions in their eyes. Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron jumped into the water. "We're humans, remember?" Alice pointed out. "We can't breathe under water. "Yes you can," urged Zafron. "Just try it." The girls held their breath anyway, and leaped into the water. After a few minutes of sitting in the water while the boys laughed, the girls finally gave in and ... surprisingly, the water was just like air, but fresher, clearer, and somehow relaxing to breathe. Suddenly, Ellie noticed something creeping out from behind a rock. It was green and about the size of a small dog. It looked sort of like something out of a fantasy tale, sort of like a... "Is that a... goblin?" Ellie asked. Carsol laughed. "Not a goblin! A goblit. Completely different species." Carsol smiled. "Goblins will eat you alive if you're not careful, but goblits are harmless!" "Wow! I had no idea," Ellie said. "In fact," Cardreg added, "Goblits are the reason we can breathe underwater. They breathe in water, and when they exhale, they release a type of magic that allows us to breathe." Molly noticed that the Goblit was swimming toward them. "Why is it coming this way?" she asked nervously. "I'm not sure," Cardreg replied. "They don't usually interact with us that much." The goblit stopped right in front of them, reaching out with its boney arm, and looking behind at the castle. "What's he pointing at?" Alice asked. "It looks like --" Zafron started. "Grog," interrupted a new voice behind them. They whipped around to see Vincent swimming toward them. "What are you doing here?" asked Carsol. "I was coming to help feed the moat creatures, but then I noticed you all with the goblit," he said. "I've never seen one interact with a Holfman before," he added. "Neither have I," said Cardreg. His two brothers nodded. "Something is messing with all three of our worlds, and we need to figure out what!" said Vincent, pounding his fist. The girls nodded. Time for another meeting.

Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron continued to train Ellie, Alice, and Molly in their hunting and fighting skills. With time, the girls were almost as good as the triplets. "Great. Now try twisting the sword and pushing the shield forward, OK?" suggested Zafron to the Queens. "Hey, um, Carsol?" stuttered Ellie. "Yeah?" "You told us about the Transfigure Peak. If it can change you into Holfmans, can it change you back?" "I'm not sure," he replied, looking distant. "Do you remember what your name was when you were little?" "I was only one year old. That was too long ago. Now practice the push move." Ellie sighed. He was so mysterious. "You know what? We haven't had a break in forever!" exclaimed Molly. "You're right," agreed Alice and Ellie. "We know the perfect place!" exclaimed the boys. The Lilians ran into the woods until they came to a large, sparkling pond with a waterfall. "Wow! It's beautiful." Suddenly Carsol came up behind Ellie, wrapped his arms around her and jumped into the pond with her. Zafron did the same with Alice and Cardreg did the same for Molly. They were laughing and splashing for hours. "I guess we better get going. Vincent will probably wonder where we are," said Cardreg. "Yeah." They triplets carried the girls out of the water. They laughed as the boys threw them back into the water and then helped them climb back out. They dried off and ran back to the castle. Just as the six were racing up the stairs, Vincent walked out. "You all look like you've been having fun!" he said smiling. They looked at each other confused and then started laughing. "Yes, well that's all good, but you have work to do," he said angrily. Immediately they stopped laughing and turned their attention towards him. "Um, sir, yes sir!" all of the Lilians replied. "Good. Now follow me. One of my patrol officers, Hayshire, has called an urgent meeting." The girls looked at the boys anxiously as they walked into the castle, dripping a few drops of water onto the hallway floors. Most of the Lilians gathered in the room were military Holfmans and other important Lilians. They were all anxious and stirring in their seats, discussing possible causes for the meeting. Vincent cleared his throat and pounded his enormous paw against the table. The Lilians quieted down and stared at Vincent. "People of Lilia!" he began. "My officer, Hayshire, has called this meeting because he has found some disturbing news. I will let him tell you the rest." Hayshire dipped his head at Vincent as he stepped forward. "We have been in peace for a very long time. But as I have feared, this peace has come to an end," he said. The Holfmans stared with questioning expressions. "My patrols and I have found six dead Holfmans." The crowd gasped and broke out in distressed conversation. "Lilians! Listen to me! This is a serious matter and we must take action. Ellie, Molly, Alice, and you three boys!" The girls and guys stood up. "You have learned how to be a warrior. And now that training will be put into action," Hayshire spoke. "Yes. We will protect Lilia no matter what," they all agreed. "That's good. First, however, we have to find out what is causing these deaths. I want everyone keep their eyes peeled for clues. Now get to it!" he commanded. The crowd began to clear. The three girls and the triplets were exhausted and now they had to fight some unknown evil force? Yeah right! The sun rose too quickly the next morning. It was hard for the girls and triplets to drag their feet out of the bed and eat their breakfast. Vincent motioned for them to come with him into the Issue Room so he could speak with them. "I have scheduled several patrols for today. Hayshire and his group will take this morning, Gref, my newly appointed lieutenant, will take the afternoon, and you six will patrol this evening." They nodded. "Any questions?" asked Vincent. "Just one," replied Ellie. "Why do we have the night shift?" she asked. "Because that's when the deaths have been occurring." Only a few stars were visible as the sky began to blacken. Clouds were covering most of the moon. "What a wonderful night for us to have to patrol!" sighed Alice. Carsol held a lantern and the other five crowded around him. They walked into the woods and started towards the border. An owl hooted in the distance. Molly shuddered. Ellie gripped Carsol's arm. "This is really spooky. Vincent is going to pay for this," said Cardreg shaking his head. Half an hour had passed and they hadn't seen anything. "I think we should head back," Zafron suggested. All of them were shivering as they raced back to the castle. Suddenly the six stopped. They heard a shriek. "What…what was that?" stuttered Alice. No one answered. Carsol whispered in Ellie's ear, "My advice would be to run." The group took off running at full speed. Because no one was talking, you could hear all the footsteps but there was not the sound of six people running, but seven. Molly tripped on a root weaving out of the ground and fell. Cardreg grabbed her off the ground and carried her until she was able to run. With the stranger still on their tail, Molly, Alice, Ellie, Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron ran closer to the castle. As soon as they could see the guards they started yelling. "Quick! Get everyone inside! The killer is behind us! Run!" they shouted. The five guards turned to secure the gates but suddenly three of them dropped dead. The girls gasped. Whoever the killer was had struck again and would kill more if they couldn't stop him…or her...or whatever it was. They boys ran ahead and closed the gates. The girls turned to face their enemy and fight.

"What do you mean he's not your father?!" the girls exclaimed. "He may call us his children but we're not. We were actually humans many years ago," they explained while the girls stood with their mouths hanging open. "When we were about one year old the three of us, being triplets, wandered into Lilia during the Annual Rain. Because we were only infants, Felix took us in and brought us to Transfigure Peak where we were changed into Holfmans. But as we got older he treated us like his personal slaves." "Gosh. That must be hard for you," said Molly. "It is and we'll do anything to get rid of him!" "Well, we'll do anything to help you and get our place back on the throne," said Ellie. And with that they sailed back into the castle. It was already sunset and before too long, Felix spotted them in the castle. "You are not welcome here! Now get out!" he ordered. "They are. But they must gather their things." Zafron's excuse seemed pretty believable. And it was. With a last glare at the girls, he stalked past. Ellie, Molly, and Alice breathed a sigh of relief. "Our plan is go! Now get moving!" the boys said. The castle was dark and spooky at night. Felix was walking down the hall heading towards his bedroom. Ellie was silently creeping along the railing on the floor above Felix. She had a roll of duct tape. She was listening carefully to his footsteps. As soon as he was under her, she leaped. Ellie's aim was perfect and she landed on his shoulders. She tugged and tore the duct tape and placed it on his mouth before he had a chance to yell. Then out of nowhere, Molly and Alice jumped out with ropes and started running around Felix, tying him up. He tried to yell and squirm but the ropes and tape wouldn't let him budge. Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron each had a dart shooter loaded with sedation. They fired the dart straight into Felix's rear-end. Within seconds he was out cold. Everyone high-fived each other. "Great work, guys!" said the girls. "But it's not over yet. We still have to get him to Grog," pointed out Zafron. They hauled Felix onto their shoulders and up the stairs. They had a rope hanging out the window that they could climb down. They shimmied down the rope and started running towards Grog. By the time the master-minds had reached the edge of Lilia, it was almost dawn. "We can't pass through because we are Holfmans," said Cardreg. "But you can. All you have to do is take him across the border and run back before you start smelling like a Grogian," joked Carsol. The girls laughed and picked Felix back up. They ran across the border, dropped Felix, and ran back. "There!" said the trio. "Good work! The Grogians will take care of him," the boys said. As tired as they were, the Lilians started back to the castle. The moon was high in the sky by the time the six arrived home. They went to their separate rooms and collapsed on the beds, exhausted. But the boys had to stay behind. Their "mother" was distraught with worry about her husband. "Mom, we told you! The smoke from the fire damaged his lungs and he died. So we buried him in the Lake," they said, trying to sound believable. Guardia cried for a long time but the triplets couldn't do anything to help her. They left her in her room and went to try and sleep. Morning came too soon. But as if nothing had happened, the maids came to wake everyone up. They slept fifteen more minutes before getting up and then slowly walked to the dining hall. Something was different when they walked in this time. Instead of all the Holfmans bowing, they were cheering. "Hail the Queens! They have rid us of great evil!" they cried. Apparently everyone had found out what they did…and they were happy? Molly whispered to Ellie. "What's going on?" "I have no clue!" she replied. The triplets came up beside them. "We may have let it slip." They laughed. Even though the girls were still confused, they couldn't help but smile. And eat! They hadn't had a good meal in over twenty-four hours and the breakfast food looked like diamonds and gold to them. They dug in and savored the delicious food. Once they were finished, Vincent stood up and went to the front of the room. "People of Lilia!" he began. "Today is a special day! For our Queens have rid us of our evil tyrant! And so I declare this day a national Lilian holiday. We shall call it Ya'll Day!" he declared. They girls covered their mouths trying to hide their laughter. Vincent walked over to them and shook their hands while the Holfmans chanted their names. "Maybe Lilia isn't so bad after all," the girls said.

"Wow," said Ellie. "I know. It's unreal how they all learn this stuff. Even the little kids," added Alice. The new Lilians went to their separate rooms to shower. There were new clothes outside the doors. I guess we have a different set of clothes for everything, thought Ellie. After showering, they slipped on the new garments, put on make-up, and styled their hair. "I hope they weren't waiting on us," said Molly. It had taken them about an hour to get ready. "Well if they were, then they're going to be really hungry!" On the way down to the dining hall the girls started discussing if they would stay here or not. "If our families never knew we existed then what would happen if we found a way back home?" wondered Alice. "That's a stupid question. Felix said there was no way back out! We are stuck here," declared Ellie. "Unless...unless you can get out as well as in during the Annual Rain," pointed out Molly. "Did something that smart just come out of your mouth?" kidded Ellie. Molly smirked. "She's got a point," Alice said. "What if we end up liking it here though? Of course that would mean leaving our horses and other pets behind and I'm not sure if I could do that," sighed Ellie. "If our families don't remember us, then why would our pets?" Alice asked. "True," Molly agreed. "Let's eat and sleep on it one more night. Then we can think about it some more," suggested Ellie. "OK." The doors of the dining hall opened wide and once again the Lilians stood and bowed to their new leaders. Upon looking at the food on the tables, the girls couldn't help but smile. There was barbecue, fried chicken, baked beans, and corn-bread, not to mention the sweet tea. And surprisingly it was all delicious! The trio sat across the table from the Holfman trio. They talked and discussed new training tactics. Suddenly Felix shouted a call for everyone to be quiet. "Everyone! This is urgent! Vincent has an important announcement," he shouted. "Holfmans of Lilia! For a time we have been in peace. However that peace may be coming to a close. There is a fire surrounding the Lake! If we don't get it under control soon it could destroy our ships and jump across the Lake to the castle. I will need all of your help!" The girls dropped their corn-bread and stood up. "What are you all staring at him like little babies for? Let's go!" The Lilians raced out of the castle, carrying as much water as they could. The fire was bigger than anyone had imagined. It rose at least twenty feet surrounding the entire Lake. "Something tells me this was a man-made fire," said Ellie. Molly and Alice nodded. The Holfmans stepped into row boats and got closer to the fire. The girls started coughing. There was so much smoke you could hardly see straight! Alice, Molly, and Ellie started scooping out water from the Lake and tossing it onto the fire. Carsol, Zafron, and Cardreg had a long hose and were spraying it down. Suddenly there was a large crack. A huge oak tree on fire was falling into the Lake... And the girls were right in its path! They paddled as fast as they could but they weren't quick enough. The tree crashed right beside them creating a huge wave. Sparks and bark from the tree were thrown into their faces and the water flipped the boat. One minute they were putting out a fire. The next, they were under the Lake, in pain and unconscious. Molly was the first to stir. Then Ellie, then Alice. Somehow they had gotten to the castle hospital after the tree disaster. Felix, Gardia, the three boys, and Vincent were hovering over them along with the nurses, Klike, Redit, and Daild. Everything was stiff and painful but they managed a few words. "What happened?" asked Molly. "The tree fell on you. Every one of you are lucky to be alive. But you will be out of training for a while," replied Felix, disappointed. Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron seemed discouraged. "And the fire?" asked Ellie. "It seems our guardians in Gaze had mercy on us. We were able to put the fire out in about six hours," answered Vincent. It was Alice who asked the third question. "Who are our guardians and what is Gaze?" Guardia replied, "Gaze is where all great leaders and fighters and important Lilians go. They watch over us and help us in times of need." "If they aren't angry of course," added Zafron. The girls struggled to make their breakfast go down. Everything felt raw and bare. Ellie had a burn running across her nose. Molly had one right above her eye. And Alice's was on the front of her neck. The tree branches had scratched them and they had bruises from the boat and tree landing on top of them. It would be a long recovery for them. "We've got nothing but time," said Alice. "It'll be another year before the Annual Rain anyway," added Ellie. "Yep," Molly replied. Just then Felix walked in. "You've got more than time on your hands!" He sounded furious. "You've got a country to run! All these Holfmans and Lilians to protect and make happy! You three girls must do everything in your power to keep running Lilia, as will I." The girls looked at each other. Alice spoke up. "What if we don't want to run Lilia forever? What if we want to see our families and homes again? You didn't think about that!" Molly and Ellie agreed she sounded angrier than Felix. Felix straightened up and clenched his teeth. "If that's the way you want it, then so it shall be. But you will wait until the next Annual Rain. Until then, Lilia shall be without a leader thanks to you three girls. You were the prophecy. And now you will shatter the hopes and dreams of so many Lilians," he said. "And I swear by mine, and my family's lives, Gaze will punish you!" With that he stormed out of the hospital, slamming the door. The trio took a deep breath. They had been holding their breaths the whole time during Felix's tantrum. "Great! Now we have to live in Lilia for a whole year and we probably can't even live in the castle anymore!" exclaimed Ellie, close to tears. All of them were close to tears. Klike, Redit, and Daild sat quietly at their desks, pretending they hadn't witnessed the whole event. Molly shook her head. "I don't care what we have to do to Felix," she said. "And I don't know about ya'll, but I'm going to run Lilia whatever it takes!" "We're in!" replied Ellie and Alice. "As are we!" The voices belonged to the three sons. "You all deserve this country more than any other human or Holfman or any creature! And we will fight to the death for you," they said. "Thank you." Alice, Molly, and Ellie had summoned all of their strength and walked out of the hospital with Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron. "We can take you to the Stream of Health. It is where the Lake runs into. There you can rebuild your strength," explained Carsol. The girls nodded. Thank Gaze the grass wasn't tall anymore, like it was when they had first entered Lilia. It only took them an hour's hike to reach the Stream of Health. "Here we are! You can drink it and swim in it," said Cardreg. Normally they would have just drank it. But because of the burns, the leaders dove into the Stream. Instantly they felt revived and reenergized. The water was just the right temperature and felt soothing. However they didn't stay in too long because they didn't want to look selfish or like fools. "Before we leave, you must kneel on that rock and pray and give thanks to Gaze," Zafron instructed. "But we're Christians!" exclaimed Molly. "We'd be praying to a false god and that's not allowed!" Cardreg sighed. "Gaze is not a god," he said. "Gaze is a place full of Lilians who have done amazing and wonderful deeds. And if you don't, my father's words will be the truth, which means you will be punished!" Silently they climbed upon the rock and prayed to the Lilians of Gaze. After they were finished the six began walking back towards the castle. "Did you really mean what you said in the hospital?" Zafron asked Alice. "Yes and how do you know all the things we said?" "We listened to through the door," he said shrugging. "Oh. That explains it," she replied. On the way back they discussed possible plans to overthrow Felix. "The promise he made has upset us," said Carsol. "He swore by our lives when he should have only sworn by his." "I have it!" said Zafron. "In the cover of night, we'll kidnap him. Then we can take him to the edge of Lilia and let the Grogians take him!" "OK...but who are the Grogians?" Molly asked. "They belong to the country bordering ours called Grog. Not a very pleasant name," explained Carsol. "I'm surprised you dislike your father enough to do this," said Ellie. "He's not our father," they said.

The group of Holfmans walked back down the trail where Molly, Ellie, and Alice had come from. The small tree on the trail was now a great oak with dozens of winding branches. As they kept going the new sight was even more spectacular. The pond was transformed into a magnificent, huge lake, sparkling under the sunlight. Even more amazing was the beautiful castle on the once Little Island. "That's incredible!" they all exclaimed. "Yes, it is, isn't it? You will live here. Castle of Lilia is yours," said Felix, smiling. The girls grinned from ear to ear and followed Felix and his family around the Lake. "This was once what you humans call a 'paddle boat'," Felix explained. It certainly wasn't a paddle boat anymore. Now the boat was a mahogany ship with sails intertwined with gold thread. "I swear. This cannot be real. Pinch me someone," said Ellie, shaking her head. Molly reached over and pinched her arm. "Ow! I was being sarcastic!" she said rubbing her arm. The Holfmans stepped on board except for Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron. They waited until after the girls had gotten on the ship, nodding after each girl got on, before they got on themselves. Then some of the male Holfmans hoisted up the sails and they floated smoothly over to the castle on the island. The grass was soft, green, and slightly damp with mist from the rain. The sons of Felix lowered the gate and even more Holfmans marched out, but these were dressed in fancy and colorful garments. They bowed their heads and greeted the girls. "A pleasure to meet you. I am Vince. I am the military leader of Lilia," said a Holfman dressed in blue and gold clothes. The girls awkwardly dipped their heads and replied, "Hi. Our names are Molly, Alice, and Ellie." Vince led them inside the castle gates. Inside the gates was the castle and the surroundings. There were all sorts of fruit and nut trees and decorations of all different colors. There was a military building behind the castle. The outside was made of marble and had carvings of what looked like famous military leaders of the Lilians. "Vince is our finest general. He and his army will protect you at all costs," promised Gardia. "Thank you," replied the trio. On the doors of the castle were the letters, M, E, and A. "Do those stand for us?" asked Molly. "Yes, of course," replied Felix. "I still don't understand something," said Ellie. "How did everything change to the way it is now. Lilia wasn't like this when we first came in." "You remember when it rained, right?" asked Carsol. "Yeah." "Well, it wasn't normal rain. It's called the Annual Rain. Once a year it rains like that and humans can enter if they can find it and enter when it rains," explained Cardreg and Zafron. "This is really hard to understand. How can we ever live here?" asked Alice doubtfully. "You will learn the ways of Lilia soon enough," replied Vincent. Inside the castle was even bigger. There were tons of stairways leading up and down. To the center of the room were three thrones. One was lime green, one was purple, and another was pink. "I'm thinking I'm going to like living in Lilia!" said Ellie dreamily. The three sons, Felix, and Gardia led the girls to their rooms and left them with a tray of gourmet dinner to eat. "We'll see you all in the morning at nine AM sharp! Your maids will wake you up," said Felix. Three small Holfmans bowed and walked away. The rest of the Holfmans walked down the stairs. "Alice, I have a question to ask you," said Ellie. "OK, shoot." "How did you not know there was a whole other world in your neighborhood?!" Ellie screamed. "Whoa, chill. It's not my fault. It's not everyday I go into the woods and search for new worlds," she replied. Molly said, "Let's just try this out and see how it works. Maybe if we try hard enough we can find a way back to our town. Or if we really like ruling Lilia, we could stay here." "True," the other two girls replied. "Why don't we at least try and get some sleep?" suggested Ellie. "OK." They all went back to their separate rooms, ate their dinner, and eventually drifted off into a deep and needed sleep. Each girl awoke to the sound of the Holfman maids pounding on the doors to wake them up. Each groaned and stretched their tired muscles. They opened their doors to tell the maid they were awake and found new and beautiful clothes for them. Alice's clothes were purple, like her throne; Ellie's were green, like her throne; and Molly's were pink, like her throne. The girls got dressed and sleepily trudged their way down to the dinning room for breakfast. When they arrived, they found a long table, crowded with delicious looking foods. Many Holfmans lined the sides of the table staring at the trio as they walked in. All the Holfmans stood up and bowed as Ellie, Alice, and Molly made their way to the cushiony looking seats at the end of the table. Apparently they all had been waiting for the girls. They smiled awkwardly and Molly began to wave until Ellie gave her a look and she put it down. The Lilians began to dig into the breakfast feast. What was first? The perfectly boiled eggs? The juicy bacon? The fluffy biscuits? The newcomers didn't know where to start! But it didn't take long for them to decide. During the meal the girls chit-chatted and gossiped and occasionally glanced up to see the Holfmans sometimes whispering and drifting their eyes toward them. Clearly not all of the Lilians were glad that the new leaders had arrived. With a loud clap the room was suddenly silent. "Why'd everyone get quiet?" asked Alice. Vincent, Felix, Gardia, and the three boys strutted through the doors, smiling welcomingly. Once again, the Holfmans stood and bowed, this time joined by the girls. "How was your night?" asked Felix. "Great! Those are the softest beds and pillows we've ever slept on!" answered the three. "Excellent. I'm glad." "We've got a long day ahead of us," said Carsol. "Yeah. We're going to teach you all to hunt and fight," said Cardreg, smiling. "This should be fun," said Zafron. Ellie, Molly, and Alice followed the boys to the training grounds. "I need one thing cleared up here," said Molly. "Do ya'll seriously want us to rule ya'll's country?" "Yes, we do. You may not think you are fit to now, but soon I promise, you will be," replied the sons. Molly sighed and took her place on the field. "First we will show you how to aim your arrow to bring down the Drefts." "Yeah, OK, but what are Drefts!?" asked Alice. Zafron chuckled and then explained. "A Dreft is a combination of a hawk, deer, and raccoon. They can be difficult to hunt down but once you learn how it will be no trouble at all." Alice nodded. The three Holfmans raised their arrows, pointed them upward, then did a front flip and released the arrow. It whistled straight to its target. The mouths of the girls dropped open, stunned. "That looks easy enough. If you're some combination of creature that live in a magical word and have been doing that all their lives!" exclaimed Ellie. "Trust me it's not as hard as you think," said Carsol, walking over to Ellie. He grasped the bow and her arms and showed her just how to hold it. Then he said, "Just throw yourself into the flip." Together they did a perfect front flip and the arrow hit the bulls-eye. Ellie smiled. Cardreg did the same for Molly, and Zafron for Alice. After a short time, all three girls had hit their target dozens of times. "Fighting will require much more time and patience than hunting, to learn," said the Holfmans. Carsol and Cardreg began to battle, using swift movements to flick and slice the sword. They ducked behind the shield and jumped out dodging each blow. It was incredible to watch. Maybe the hunting seemed amazing, but this made that look like kids' stuff. "There is no way we are ever going to be able to do that!" said Molly. "That is what you said about the hunting," pointed out Zafron. "Yeah, but that was a lot less complicated than this," added Ellie. "Just give it a go. You might find it is a lot easier that it looks." Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron showed them the basic moves and they tried it out. By lunch time, they were sweating like pigs, but had mastered the easy movements. "That was good work all of you! We can continue a bit after lunch," said Carsol. "You three can go to your rooms and get washed up, then meet us in the dining hall for lunch. We decided to have a traditional meal from your area of the world. I think you'll like it," said Cardreg smiling. The girls trudged back to the castle, wiping their sweaty brows.

Don't we all just want a little place to go and escape? Somewhere where no one can find you and you can't hear the voices of truth? Admit it. You know and wish you could have a place like that. If you search hard enough you can.
"It's too cold to swim," said Ellie. "I know. I wish there was something else we could do," said Alice and Molly. "Do you remember when we built that fort in the woods that went back into the gully?" asked Molly to Ellie. "Um...no. I think that was Matt," she replied. "Oh yeah." "But we did build that tepee in your woods!" said Ellie. "Omigod yeah!" Molly exclaimed. "Hey, I have an idea," said Alice. "We could go build a tepee in my back yard!" "Yeah!" they all agreed. "Let's go into the woods behind my house," said Alice. So they put on their hiking boots and set out into the great unknown of Alice's backyard. They hadn't gone too far when they could hear music. "What the heck is that?" asked Molly. "It's the neighbors. We're pretty close to their house," replied Alice. "There aren't any good sticks to build a tepee with," sighed Molly and Ellie. "Hey, I know a great place. It's behind the drains down the street. Ya'll want to go?" asked Alice hopefully. They both agreed so they started down the street. They were passing an intersection in the neighborhood when Molly looked down the street. "Hey ya'll! Look at that. There's a perfect gap in the trees. Let's go!" Ellie and Alice looked to where she was pointing and they took off down the street, running as fast as they could with heavy boots on. Molly, Ellie, and Alice walked through the gap and into the forest. The trees were thin and tall but there was little space between them. They couldn't see any houses or hear any neighbors. The three girls walked a little ways before stopping to look around. "Hey, what's that over there?" asked Ellie. "I think it's a lake or pond." Alice and Molly widened their eyes and they started weaving through the trees as fast as they could. They could see the water clearly now and stopped to gaze in amazement. In front of them was a small lake surrounded by trees and tall grass. It was beautiful. Molly walked down closer to the water. "Look at the edge of the water," she said pointing. "Lily pads!" exclaimed Alice. "And tons of them!" added Ellie. Ellie looked up. "Wow. Now, that's cool," she said. In the very center of the lake was a small island, overgrown with trees and bushes. "This is so amazing. I can't believe we found it," said Molly. "We can't tell anyone about this. It's our place," said Alice seriously. "Well, our place needs a name," suggested Ellie. "Something original; something neat," said Alice. Ellie snapped her fingers. "I got it! See all the lily pads? We can call it Lilia!" she said. "Yeah! That's great!" the two other girls said. "We should go explore the rest of Lilia!" suggested Molly. "OK." "Then we can come back and build our fort," said Alice. "Oh yeah," said Ellie."The island in the middle of the lake can be the center of Lilia. It'll be called...Little Island." "OK, that'll work." The trio marched on through the thick grass. "We probably shouldn't go too far. The grass is too tall to see anything under it, like snakes," said Alice carefully checking where she stepped. "Yeah. We--whoa. Check that out," pointed Molly. "It's a paddle boat! Someone must know this place is here." "But look closer," said Alice. "The bottom of the paddle boat is wooden. They don't make wooden paddle boats anymore," pointed out Ellie. "We could get to the island!" said Molly happily. "Um, not a good idea. We have no idea if it can float or not," Alice replied. "Yeah. Darn." They started walking back to where they had decided to build the fort. "Listen," whispered Ellie cupping her hand to her ear. Alice and Molly stopped and listened. The wind picked up and made the leaves of the trees rustle against each other. "This place was meant for us," said Ellie. The girls walked back to the place where all the lily pads were and started bringing broken trees against a tree to start their tepee. They used really long branches so all three of them could fit inside the fort. "We can use that cleared area by the lake for Lilia meetings," said Alice. "Sure," replied Molly and Ellie. They had gotten about half way done with the outside of their tepee when they heard a crack of thunder and the rain started to poor down. "Great! We didn't even finish. It'll get blown down in the storm," sighed the girls They ran through the forest, the rain soaking their clothes. "There's the small tree we passed the first time." All three could see the edge of the forest up ahead as the rain got heavier. "Finally. We're th- what happened?" asked Ellie. Instead of coming out into Alice's neighborhood, they were in a grassy clearing lined with wooden and mud huts. "My house! And all the other houses! Where'd they go!?" exclaimed Alice. Molly stood gaping at the huts. "I have a feeling that Lilia wasn't as make-believe as we thought," said a stunned Alice. Just then the doors of the huts began to open. They watched as the inhabitants stepped out into the slightly decreasing rain. Though their sizes and shapes were slightly different, all the creatures looked about the same. They had long legs that looked like horse legs. Their feet looked like paws with very long claws, just like their hands. They had the body of a wolf and the head and face of a human. The male creatures wore pants down to their knees and vests. The female creatures wore skirts down to their knees and long-sleeved shirts. "Whoa. Those are definitely not my neighbors," said Alice shaking her head. By now the rain had let up and the sun was shining through the trees. "I wonder if they're friendly," said Ellie. "I think we're fixing to find out. They're coming this way," replied Molly. The Lilians made they're way down to the edge of the clearing where the trio stood. The largest of the Lilians stepped out of the crowd and approached the girls. "Greetings. We are the inhabitants of Lilia. We are called Holfmans and we would like to welcome you to Lilia. How may we be of assistance?" asked the Holfman. "Um, well yeah see, the thing is," started Molly. Ellie finished for her. "When we came to the Lake this area was Alice's neighborhood where humans lived. Then when it started to rain we came back but we found ya'll. Where did our town go?" The Holfmans glanced at each other and laughed. "What's so funny?" asked Alice. "Once you come into Lilia, there's no way to get out. You three are the first humans to find Lilia. And just in time. We needed a leader," spoke the Lilian. "OK, stop and rewind. Leaders?" asked Alice. "Yes, indeed. We could sense you three when you came in to Lilia today. And we knew you were the ones who would lead us to thrive in this land." "We don't belong here. We're not even teenagers yet. We have families at home!" cried Molly. "They don't know you're gone. They don't know who you are. When you left your world it was as if you never existed," said large Holfman. The girls were more confused than ever. "But how?" asked Ellie. "You don't need to know. All you do need to know is that this is your home now and you have a destiny to fulfill. Come with me," he said. "Before we follow you and 'fulfill our destiny' can you at least tell us you name?" asked Ellie. "My name is Felix. These are my sons, Carsol, Cardreg, and Zafron. And last my wife Gardia. Now you must come with me, Ellie, Alice, and Molly." "How do you know our names?" asked Alice. "I told you. We've been waiting for you," Felix said.
