Dear Jacob,

Not sure how you would react to this if I sent it. I probably won't, seeing as I've kept this for three years and will probably keep it until senior year.

You'll remember first talking to me in 6th grade. I began to notice you because one of my 7th grade friends pointed you out as the only attractive 6th grader on the team. Quickly after, I noticed that she was right. I asked you to dance that year and remember you laughing. I decided to get over you when my best friend told me she liked you. Things did not go as planned.

It wasn't a prominent attraction. I didn't want to date you because I hated everything about you. Sound confusing? It should. It's difficult for me to think of what I see in you. I'm not even sure most days. But then you smile and I remember.

I had two boyfriends between 6th and 8th grade. These were the lowest points of that attraction, though the attraction was clearly still there. You made fun of me about both of those boyfriends, which I secretly enjoyed. I've always secretly enjoyed our fights and quarrels, simply because it was a way for me to talk to you. I'd look forward to sitting next to you in math class and whacking you in the back of the head with your composition book.

The only reason that we ever started fighting was because of my attraction to you. I have a tendency to pick fights under such circumstances as liking someone. Pick fights, tease, anything. Remember the "I CAYUNT!" incident? Didn't you notice that I cried, feeling horrible? I try not to ever cry in front of people; I hate looking weak. I cried anyway. I felt horrible because I care about you, a lot, and thinking that I'd hurt you that bad terrified me.

Your eyes. They are brown. There's so much more I could say about your eyes. I've written poems and dreamed about your eyes. When you smile, they practically melt with the consistency of milk chocolate. When you smile at me like that, I find myself unable to speak or function.

As you learned in math class working with Ben H on the project, I have kissed Corey in the past. Did you know, however, that I consider my first kiss-like experience to have happened within a dream? You and I sit on a stone ledge in some weird building where Jason G has almost died. I express my fear of falling off the ledge. You place your hand over mine, smile, and kiss me. Then, somehow, in the middle of it we are deposited into a crowded cornfield. I know, weird. But it was just like in real life, as I would learn later.

There's not much more I can say. I know a lot about you. It's accumulated through knowing you and being interested for so long, not in 5 minutes like Rachel. Still. I think about this year in High School and how I do not want to date. One of the reasons, I realized yesterday, was that I could never be in a relationship if I still felt this way about you. I'd still be thinking about that dream every time I saw you, reliving instances where we accidentally touched or when I hugged you on the last day of school. You were disgusted. I was hyper.

The bottom line is: I have liked you for a long time. I still like you quite a bit. I know you hate me, so I'll keep this up for as long as I need to or until I know I probably won't see you again.

And then when you pulled away, and you thought I was finished. I never wanted to let you go. So I held on and pulled your head back to my lips. I could tell you were shocked. You probably weren't used to girls kissing you like that. And let me tell you: I've never kissed a guy like that before, so it was new for me too.

Later that night when I texted you and thanked you, you thought that Imari and I had set you up. Imari was appalled that I was dancing with you. I would never do that to you. Please give me a chance. I know you're stressed right now, and I am, too. I really, really like you. I'm still upset that you don't believe me, but you should. I really do like you, and I really will do just about anything for you.
