The Good Fight To Eat Right

How have Eating Disorders affected your life? Have you ever bothered to learn how to identify an Eating Disorder? Do you think you might have one? In this introductory survey, share how ED has affected your life and give advice to those who might be struggling with it now.

Are you a:

How old are you?

In your family, you are the:

What is your racial/ethnic background?

Country:

My home is in a:

What is an Eating Disorder?
Anorexia: where you try to lose weight beyond normal by cutting food or exercising a lot.
Bulimia: where you will eat too much and then get rid of it by purging.
Compulsive Eating: where you will overeat for some other reason than hunger.
Binge Eating: where you eat too much regularly without necessarily purging afterwards.
 All of the above!

How would you, personally, define 'normal' eating?

Do your friends make you feel good about yourself?
Yes, I'm happy when I'm with my friends.
Mostly. The good outweighs the bad, but there are ups and downs.
Sometimes. I hold out for the golden moments, but they're not as often as I'd like.
Now that I think about it... NO! They don't!

Do you count calories?
Yes, I know how many calories are in everything I eat.
Yeah. It's good to keep in mind, just in case.
Sometimes I check when I'm curious, but it's not a huge deal.
Not usually. I might look if I'm bored or if someone says something.
Never! I don't even know how many calories would be "a lot."
 Um. What are calories?

Are you a perfectionist?  No Answer      Yes      Maybe      No      What's that?

Name one thing you love about yourself.

Do you know if you have a healthy weight according to your doctor?
Actually, my doctor says I'm overweight.
My doctor says that I am within the healthy weight range.
Actually, my doctor says I'm underweight.
 I don't know! I haven't asked my doctor recently ;)

How does your body size compare to your classmates?
I'm bigger than most people my age.
I'm more or less the same as most people my age, I'd say.
I'm smaller than most people my age.
 I couldn't tell you! I'm not sure.

If you could, would you change your weight?
Yeah, sure: to "perfect," haha! Whatever that is.
Seriously: I think I could stand to lose a few pounds.
I wish I could gain weight, actually!
Hey, I'm happy with my body. Little changes don't matter.

Is it realistic for YOU to want to have a body like a supermodel or an actress?
Yes! It takes hard work. And a nutritionist, chef, and personal trainer. Or a strong will.
I couldn't tell you. With plastic surgery and digital manipulation, who knows what they really look like?
No. Their diets and bodies are sometimes really bad for them and are dangerous to maintain.
No. They were born that way, and most people just aren't.
Yes. I'm already beautiful. I just need to be discovered!

Do you think that you have normal eating habits?
Pretty much. Sometimes I eat a little more or a little less than I planned, but it's not a regular thing or something I do on purpose. Depends on what's for dinner...
Well, yes, for a person with food allergies or a vegetarian diet, I make the proper substitutions and get what I need.
Well, most people have different eating habits from mine, but they don't think it's a problem.
A lot of people have different eating habits than me. They might not like what I do if they knew.

What's your favorite food?

Do you ever lie about your eating habits? Why?

Is it true that people you want to be friends with would judge you based on how much you weigh?
Yes, that's true, but it's for my own good -- they want me to be cute!
Yes, that's true, but they only want me to be healthy!
No. They are my friends because they like my personality. It has nothing to do with looks.
No! If they judged people that way, I wouldn't WANT to be friends with them!

Have you ever thought that someone you knew might have an Eating Disorder?  No Answer      Yes      I'm not sure      No

What would you do if you thought someone had an Eating Disorder?
Nothing! It's none of my business and not my problem.
I'd keep the secret, and maybe help them do it.
I'd confront the person and try to talk about it.
I'd bring the person some information and resources so they can help themselves.
I'd tell an adult, like their parents or someone at school. Hopefully they'll take care of it.
I'd gossip about it with my friends and see what happens.

Do you think or know that you have ever had an Eating Disorder?
 Yes, I was diagnosed.
I'm not sure, but I think I might.
No, I really don't think so.

Did you know that studies say it's safest to lose only 1 lb of weight per week?
 Yes!
 No!

How do you feel about the news that it's safest to lose weight at only 1lb per week?

Which type of thing are you most likely to compliment someone about?
[Style] I love your purse! How did you get your hair so pretty?
[Natural Beauty] Your freckles are so cute! Your smile lights up the room.
[Skill] Your painting is amazing. You were great at the track meet!
[Personality] That was really thoughtful! Haha, you're so funny.

Have you ever felt pressured to eat or not eat in an unhealthy way? How so?

Have you ever gone on a crash diet or didn't eat right for a little while?
I am considering it, but I haven't done it yet.
Yes, I have done those things.
No, I've never thought about it!
I thought about it, but decided that it's not for me.

Did you know that for every 100 girls who have an Eating Disorder, 5 to 15 of them will die?
 Yes, I knew that.
 No, I didn't know that!

What do you think about the news in the last question?

Do you ever feel like if you were thinner, you would be happier?
Yes. If I were thinner, everyone would love me, I just know it!
Yes. People are shallow and only like thin, pretty people. I want to be liked.
No. Just because someone is skinny doesn't mean they're more fun to be around. Personality matters more than weight.
Sometimes, but what can you do? We always think something we don't have will make us happy, no matter how unrealistic that is.

What would you say to someone struggling with an Eating Disorder?

In what way have Eating Disorders affected your life and your choices?
