This soundtrack is from the movie I Love You, Beth Cooper, which is based off the book by the same name. The movie and book are about a nerdy boy who, at his high school graduation, confesses his secret love for the most popular girl in school.

A good soundtrack will tell the story of the movie in music. The I Love You, Beth Cooper soundtrack does just that! The soundtrack is divided into four parts with instrumental interludes by Christophe Beck. These transitions can catch you off guard, but they help divide the soundtrack into a progressing story.

The beginning of the soundtrack seems like split personalities. The feel of the songs alternate first between sweet and melancholy, then bold and powerful. We love the opening song, "Forget Me," performed by Violet Columbus. If you liked the Kimya Dawson soundtrack of the movie Juno, you're going to love this song, too. The song was actually written by Eleni Mandell, who performs the same song as the last track of the soundtrack. The two performers manage to bring completely different sounds to the song. It's a clever twist on the traditional musical reprise or refrain. Where Violet Columbus' version of Forget Me is simply performed with just her airy voice and an acoustic guitar, Eleni Mandell's version is electric powered, drum-rhythmic, and features gritty, throaty vocals.

After the first interlude, the soundtrack is all energy. The songs are all about living fast and hard. The energy is accessible, created with strong but simple beats and emphatic vocals. We particularly liked Catch Me If You Can, which reminded us of Outkast, especially in the chorus. After this, there's another interlude. This one's a little more eerie and troubled, but builds up to a very cathartic ending! It feels like something pretty amazing must have happened.

The song following the interlude is like a revelation. It has a very far-away reflecting feel, the kind where your eyes glaze over until someone taps you on the shoulder and brings you back to Earth. Then, everything suddenly looks shiny, bright, and beautiful. The following track coasts by with a chill, easy, happy feel, like there's nothing wrong in the world.

Following the last musical interlude, the soundtrack takes on an attitude like the reclamation of life. Unlike the wild, adolescent energy of the second part of the soundtrack, this energy is controlled and mature. Something or someone has grown up a little bit! But the soundtrack is quick to remind us that we're still young and we still want to have fun. The last two songs are all excitement. Seems like bold and powerful personality #2 in the soundtrack won over!

Our favorite tracks on this mix are #1, #3, and #11, followed closely by #6 and #4. #15 is great if you like the soundtrack to 10 Things I Hate About You.

Overall, we really like this soundtrack. The instrumental interludes disrupt the listening experience somewhat as a pop-in-the-player mix, but they do help flesh out the soundtrack as a story being told. We give it a thumbs up!
